Book // The Rainbow Troops
The Rainbow Troops by Andrea Hirata is the perfect novel to tie learner differences into a cultural cache. This book is the epitome of this class and that's basically why I chose it to represent the book and write a report on. Essentially The Rainbow Troops is a story about a student attending an extremely poor school on the island of Belitong, Indonesia. Due to a monolithic bureaucracy, the school this boy attends is threatened with closure, inspiring he and his friends to band together and fight against anyone opposing the existence of their school. The author of this autobiographical novel, Andrea Hirata, has watched as her writing quickly become as influential as The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and is now the most successful author in Indonesia. I chose this book because it informs us about both the current and historical issues in Indonesia through a heart-lifting and tugging story about students who are willing to do anything in the fight to receive education.
