Adrianus Wilhelmus "Arie" Smit is an Indonesian artist that was born in the Netherlands. He joined the army in the East Indies once he was of age and lived mainly in Indonesia during his service. After Indonesian Independence was declared from the Netherlands in 1949, every Dutch national was forced to choose citizenship between Indonesia or the Netherlands. After considering emigration to South Africa, Arie chose to keep his Indonesian citizenship. I chose these pieces to depict Indonesian landscapes and environment. I believe they give effective imagery to the many perspectives of Indonesia from the point of view of an intentional resident of the country.
